Vuwani organisations seek ways to make up lost school days
- SOUTH AFRICA
JOHANNESBURG - Organisations in the Limpopo town of Vuwani want to meet government officials to discuss how to make up school days lost to recent protests.
The National Education Collaboration Trust, the Vhembe Pastors Forum, the National Association of School Governing Bodies, and various teaching unions have held a crisis meeting and denounced the destruction of property and disruption of learning.
The organisations want study camps to be held at churches and available government facilities.
The group also wants the state to protect schoolchildren in the area.
Twenty four schools have been damaged during protests against new municipal boundaries.
Spokesperson for the Department of Basic Education Elijah Mhlanga told eNCA that the closure of schools will remain in place.
"Nothing can be done as far as schooling is concerned until calm has been restored.
“The schoolchildren affected by the recent events cannot be seen to without the permission of their parents and, with that said, some of the parents want the shutdown to continue.

The Black Lawyers Association has condemned the burning down of school buildings and other infrastructure in Vuwani and the surrounding villages, saying it "cannot afford to stand aside and watch when thousands of black and rural school children are being denied their right to access to a basic education."
